Posts by KDA hosted by Segullah

Sometimes I want to find a post published on the blog Segullah, and there isn't an easy way for me to search for posts by authors.  I must note that there are several writers who are more gifted than I am.

Many of the women who write for Segullah write with greater lyricism, insight, and spirit.

Nevertheless, sometimes I want to reread one of my posts there (to witness to my own better angels). I often give myself great advice; now if I would only follow it consistently.

Segullah is a faith-based blog where women often write in a way that blends details from their daily lives with quotes or allusions to scriptures and other devotional writing as well to references to literature and culture--high culture and low culture.

(The shared faith is through membership within or proximity to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.)

So a Segullah post may refer to Jesus, Jane Austin, burnt cookies, and Lisa Simpson.

1.      FIRST POST (as a guest): October 2011: https://segullah.org/daily-special/answering-the-call-to-nurture-and-heal/

Musings about Segullah's Posts Winding Down.  I stopped contributing to Segullah in 2023..  My  last post is about podcasts, which is interesting. The readership at Segullah has waned over the last few years. It's multicausal, but I do think women of faith are participating in three other venues: listening to podcasts while doing chores or commuting to work, engaging in discussions in niche Facebook groups, and developing para-social relationships with high profile Latter-day Saints who have robust Instagram accounts.

From my informal observations, women of faith were more apt to read posts of 500 to 1,000 words  between 1995 and 2010. Yes, this was the golden era of Mommy Bloggers, but there were a lot of robust faith-based blogs that did not fit this moniker.  (By Common Consent seems to be the faith-based blog that has survived the competition from podcasts and Instagram.)

My view of Segullah's contributors--as distinct from the stereotypical label of "Mommy bloggers" is this:  the contributors were mainly women with Master's degrees (often in English literature or creative writing) who were juggling the roles of family member, church volunteer, paid employee, and community volunteer.  There were contributors who mainly did two or three of these roles, including women with households of one--but strong ties to friends and extended family member, women who primarily worked full-time, and women who primarily cared for family members in households of two to ten, including live-in parents or adult siblings.  There posts were more literary, even when discussing parenting. Some of the posts were directly literary: poetry, nonfiction literary prose, lyric essays. They also have published artwork created by LDS women.

  1. Thanks for the link to Segullah, or I should say, links. I will check it out later. Right now I am heading to a Zoom meeting set up for women age 50 plus and who live in my county and are wanting fellowship during this lockdown. The group meets for 8 weeks and is set up by the Family Services Agency.

    1. Oh, Terra. This list of links is a bit "much." Your Zoom support group sounds like a great way to address social isolation amid physical distancing. All my best to you and your group. I applaud FSA for setting up these meetings. I sometimes have people ask me to reference a post from months or years prior, and I was tired of digging.
